Text and photos on an academy page¶
How to change the words and images on one of the five program pages. All of this is on the Academy record, in the Academy Fields box.
Change text¶
Where: Academies → click the academy → Content tab
- In the dashboard, click Academies in the left menu, then click the academy.
- In the Academy Fields box, click the Content tab.
- Edit the field you need:
- About Body, the main description of the program.
- Apply Heading and Apply Body, the "how to apply" area.
- C & E Heading and C & E Intro Body, the Coaching and Equipment intro.
- Training Body, Equipment Body, Coaching Body, the three detail blocks.
- Click Update, then open the live page to check it.
Do not use the big main content area
On academy pages, the large editor above these fields does not display. Type into the labeled fields further down. Text put in the main area will not appear.
Headings have a character limit
Apply Heading and C & E Heading are short on purpose (around 35 characters). WordPress shows a live character count under each as you type. If a heading is getting cut off on the live page, shorten it.
Tips: these are rich-text boxes, so bold, italics, and links work like a word processor. Paste as plain text where you can, so you do not drag in odd formatting from Word or Google Docs.
Change a photo¶
Where: Academies → click the academy → Background Images or Galleries and Images tab
- Go to Academies and click the academy.
- Choose the right tab in the Academy Fields box:
- Background Images, the large banner images at the top of each section.
- Galleries and Images, the photo galleries and the equipment image.
- Click the image (or Select Image if it is empty) and pick from the Media Library or upload a new one.
- Click Update.
The six banner images¶
The Background Images tab holds six separate image fields, one per section of the page. Four of them have their own position field right below the image; two do not, because the schedule sections do not need a focal point control.
| Image field | Feeds | Has a position field? |
|---|---|---|
| Hero Main | The main hero at the top of the page | Yes, Hero Main Image Position |
| Hero Destinations & Schedule | The destinations & schedule hero | Yes, Hero Destination and Schedule Image Position |
| Schedule Current Background | The current schedule section background | No |
| Schedule Future Background | The future schedule section background | No |
| Hero Faculty | The faculty hero | Yes, Hero Faculty Image Position |
| Hero Coaching & Equipment | The coaching & equipment hero | Yes, Hero Coaching & Equipment Image Position |
If a Schedule Background photo needs a different focal point, there is no field for it: replace the photo with one that already crops well, rather than looking for a position setting that is not there.
Banner images have a companion position field¶
The four hero images above each have a small text field next to them, named after that hero (for example Hero Main Image Position). All four work identically: they control which part of the photo stays visible when the image is cropped to fit.
- Examples:
top left,50% 20%,center bottom. - Default: if the field is left empty, it behaves as
center center. - If a person's head is getting cut off, try
center top. Change one word at a time and check the live page. - On wide monitors the banners are tall, so a landscape photo with the subject near the middle frames best.
- See all valid positions (MDN Docs) — this is a standard CSS
object-positionvalue, not a WCA-specific format.
Image tips
- Upload landscape photos for banners. Tall portrait photos crop badly.
- Keep files small, ideally under 500 KB, so pages stay fast.
- Always fill in Alt Text when uploading. It describes the photo for screen readers and helps search results.
- Top Gallery and Bottom Gallery on the Galleries and Images tab each hold 4 images. Reorder them by dragging if you need a different order.
Give a photographer credit¶
If a photo on the site was taken by someone outside WCA, credit them in the photo's Caption. The site then shows a small "Photo: Name" box in the bottom-right corner of that photo. Photos with an empty Caption show no box.
- Go to Media and click the photo.
- In Caption, type the photographer's name only, for example
Till Strohmeyer. The site adds "Photo:" for you. - Close the photo window. Changes in the Media Library save on their own.
This works on photos anywhere on the site: banners, galleries and page images. Trip cards are the exception. They are too small, so they never show a credit.
Captions are for photo credits only
Leave Caption empty unless the photo needs a credit. Don't put descriptions, file names or notes there, or they will show up on the photo. A description of what is in the photo goes in Alt Text.
If the change does not show¶
The site caches pages for speed. Hard refresh: Cmd+Shift+R on Mac, Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows. If it still looks the same after a couple of minutes, see Troubleshooting.
